Omaha – technically known as “Limit Omaha High” – is a variant of Texas Hold’em, but contains several crucial differences.
In Hold’em you’re dealt two “hole” or “pocket” cards; in Omaha you get four. The twist is that you have to use exactly two of them; no more, no less. Five community cards are played, as in Hold’em – but players use exactly three of them, along with their two chosen hole cards, to make their hand.
The extra hole cards give everyone a better chance of getting a good, high-ranking hand – so it can be expensive to play your hand past the flop unless it’s a very good one. And this can mean that, when it’s time to lay your cards on the table, Omaha can feature some breathtaking showdowns.
