Omaha Hi-Lo, also known as High-Lo split, is an advanced variation on Omaha High in which players make two hands with their hole (or “pocket”) cards: one high, and one low.
They have to make one hand using cards of 8 or higher, using any two of their hole cards and three of the five community cards, and one hand using cards of 8 or lower, using a different two hole cards and three of the five board cards.
The pot gets split at the end of each hand: half goes to the player with the best “High” hand and half to the player with the best “Low” hand. It’s possible to win both halves if you hold the best high hand and also the best low hand.
Successful Omaha Hi-Lo players must quickly calculate the complex permutations of each hand, in the same way a successful racing punter can quickly work out the risks and rewards associated with different bets, making the game richly rewarding for its many fans.
