Find your perfect poker tournament
Poker tournaments fall into one of several different types, each requiring a different approach if you want to finish in the money. Choose from the following tournament types on offer:
Freerolls
Freerolls are scheduled tournaments with no entry fee, a fixed start time and small- to medium-sized prize funds on offer for successful players. As there’s no risk of you losing cash, Freerolls are a great way to practise your poker skills. But it’s a mistake to consider them just a matter of fun.
Skilful players can use Freerolls to build a bankroll that they can use to buy in to bigger tournaments without having to cough up their own cash.
Sit N Gos
Sit N Gos, or SNGs, are the simplest kinds of tournaments in online poker. You buy in to the tournament, take your seat, and when the table’s full – they’re usually single-table events – the tourney starts.
Finish in the top two or three (depending on how many players are in the tournament) and you’ll be in the money. Alternatively, for the ultimate in quick-game, quick win action you could go for a Heads Up tournament – just you against one other player.
Some Sit N Gos reward successful players with seats at larger, more expensive tournaments and so can be a good way to buy in to the really big events. It’s possible to qualify for tournaments like the World Series of Poker – which normally demands a $10,000 buy-in – without paying more than a few dollars of your own money, by completing a journey that can start at a qualifying SNG.
Scheduled
Scheduled multi-table tournaments (MTTs) are where the serious money is won. You register for your seat and play ‘til you’re out, moving tables as the number of players in the tournament is whittled down.
The last player standing wins the biggest prize, but you’ll cash in anywhere down to 150th place finish (depending on the size of the tournament you’re playing in).
Scheduled tournaments can be divided into Freezeouts, where it’s Goodnight Vienna once you lose your chips, and Rebuys. If you’re knocked out in the early stages of a Rebuy tournament you can buy more chips, giving you another chance of winning. Even better, every player’s rebuy fees go back into the tournament prize pool – significantly boosting the amount of money up for grabs.
Land Based
Some of the world’s most famous poker players started out playing online poker, but found more money and success after transferring their skills to land-based casino tournaments.
Playing at an event like the English Poker Open can cost thousands of pounds, after your buy-in, accommodation and travel costs are taken into account. But if you fancy your chances on the baize as well as the web you’ll find regular qualifying tournaments – known as satellites – for all the top events when you play at ATR Poker Club.
